Some helmets are built for the job. This one was built for remembrance.
For FDIC 2026, we created a one-of-one TL-2 Traditional Leather helmet that will be donated to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation and auctioned to support their mission. Every detail of this helmet was intentionally designed and executed to honor the 343 firefighters lost on September 11th, 2001.
Built by Hand, With Purpose
The build begins the same way every TL-2 does, with skilled hands and time-tested techniques. A technician carefully applies reflective silver tetrahedrons to the shell, a visual element that immediately sets this helmet apart. This TL-2 has a duotone color scheme, painted flat black on top and naturally finished underneath. Colors representing ash and soot were chosen for the top to symbolize debris raining down from above during the tragedy of that day, while the beautiful naturally finished underbrim represents the resilience of FDNY to emerge from the devastation.
A Message That Lives in the Details
Among the customizations present on this helmet is a “Never Forget” name stamp. To further emphasize the decorative elements, both the name stamp and the filigree are painted by hand, turning the helmet into something closer to a commemorative piece than standard equipment. No two brush strokes are exactly the same. You can see the human touch in every line, reinforcing what this helmet represents: individual lives, individual sacrifice.
A Legacy Set In Leather
Using laser engraving, the names of the 343 firefighters lost are burned directly into the helmet. Accompanying the names is a custom motif depicting firefighters and the towers. An image that grounds the helmet in the moment it was created to remember. This isn’t printed or applied. It’s etched permanently into the material, ensuring the tribute can’t fade or be removed.
A Contrast of Finishes
The helmet is finished in a striking two-tone configuration: flat black on top, natural leather underneath. The natural underbrim exposes the raw character of the leather. Grain, texture, and tone, contrasting against the subdued, uniform black shell above. It’s a visual reminder of what’s underneath the surface: craftsmanship, material, and meaning.
Three Hundred and Forty-Three
The final piece is the custom front shield. Marked “FALLEN 343 BROTHERS,” it serves as the focal point of the helmet, tying every detail together into a single, unmistakable tribute. Installed by hand, it completes the build and gives the helmet its identity.
